English Department 2026
At Rivervale, we nurture confident communicators and passionate readers through meaningful and engaging learning experiences. We use Strategies for English Language Learning and Reading (STELLAR) 2.0 as our primary approach to deliver the national curriculum. The vision of STELLAR is to develop in children a love for reading and a strong foundation in the English Language and it aims to strengthen children’s learning of the English Language by using engaging and age-appropriate strategies and instructional materials. Lessons are further enriched by our school-based programmes that develop students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills while fostering creativity, self-expression and a lifelong love for language and reading.
Reading @ Rivervale
Reading forms the foundation for strong language development and lifelong learning. Through dedicated reading and library periods, students are encouraged to explore a wide range of books and discover the joy of reading.
Our school library is a vibrant learning space that inspires creativity, exploration and discovery. With an extensive collection of books and engaging reading activities, students are immersed in enriching literary experiences that nurture imagination and a love for reading. From Primary 5 onwards, the reading of current affairs is integrated into the curriculum to broaden students’ awareness of national issues and world events. Through reading and discussing news articles, students reflect on contemporary topics and articulate their thoughts and perspectives through journal writing.
Oracy @ Rivervale
Good Morning, Rivervale! (GMR) provides students with opportunities to develop confidence and eloquence in public speaking through presentations at morning assembly. Through storytelling, students learn to express themselves clearly while engaging their audience effectively. GMR also serves as a platform to inculcate important values and positive character traits, as stories and poetry encourage students to reflect on school core values: respect, responsibility, resilience, integrity, care, harmony and excellence. Through these authentic speaking opportunities, students grow into confident and empathetic communicators.
English (EL) Week @ Rivervale
EL Week is an annual event planned by the English Committee. During the week, activities are planned to promote a love for English Language and to celebrate creativity and innovation through enriched experiences. Students participate in
various activities such as Language Carnival, Literature Appreciation, Character Parade, P6 Watch-a-Play, Read for Books (in collaboration with NLB) and Author’s Talk.
